LtCol Hattey was born in
Detroit
,
Michigan
and raised in
San Jose
,
California
. He was commissioned a second lieutenant via the PLC program in May 1984
following graduation from the
University
of
California
,
Berkeley
with a bachelor's degree in Latin American Studies.
Following The Basic School in 1984, LtCol Hattey was assigned as a Latin
American desk officer in the Western Regional Branch, Plans Division, PP&O,
HQMC. There he worked actions related to Marine Corps interaction with South and
Central American militaries. In the fall of 1985, he reported to 3d
Battalion, 2d Marines serving as a rifle and weapons platoon commander during
deployments to WESTPAC and
Northern Norway
. In 1987, LtCol Hattey transferred to Marine Detachment UNITAS and served as
the weapons platoon commander for UNITAS/ WATC-87. Upon his returned he served
as the adjutant and legal officer for 2d Marines.
In March 1988, LtCol Hattey reported to Marine Corps Security Force Battalion,
Atlantic
and served as a FAST platoon commander until July 1990, deploying in support of
Marine Forces Panama in 1989. He also participated in a II MEF sourced
counterdrug initiative in
Colombia
in March, 1990.
