California Congressman George A. Kasem, age 82, a lawyer who was believed to
be the first Arab American elected to Congress, died of pneumonia Feb. 11 in
Carlsbad, California.
Mr. Kasem, a Democrat, represented a Los Angeles area district for one term
in the House of Representatives, from 1959 to 1961. He lost his bid for
reelection and returned to his law practice.
He was born to parents of Lebanese descent in Drumright, Okla., and moved to
California as a teenager. He served with the Army Air Forces in Europe and
North Africa during World War II. After the war, he graduated from the
University of Southern California and its law school.
